Students assist with community projects during Serve Plainview

PLAINVIEW, TX — Wayland Baptist University students, along with some faculty and staff, provided a dozen non-profit organizations with assistance Saturday, April 6, during Serve Plainview, the university’s annual day of service to the community.

The Curry Pioneer Leaders, the university’s new leadership program participants, organized the event, in association with Wayland’s Office of Spiritual Life. BASC classes also provided manpower at several locations. They were joined by students who volunteered to make a difference in their community. More than 50 students were involved in the effort, according to Teresa Young, development officer in the Office of Advancement.

While most projects were completed between 9 a.m. and noon, some went longer. Santa Fe Terrace, an assisted living facility, planned a full day of activities, including wheelchair races and other events for residents. Some students went to the facility Saturday afternoon after completing projects at other organizations.

Compassionate Care Pregnancy Center was a busy place as student volunteers assisted with a yard sale that drew lots of buyers. At Christian Manor Apartments, a senior residential community, students helped residents with laundry, while volunteers visited with residents of BeeHive Homes of Plainview. Students called Bingo games at Prairie House Living Center, another nursing home.

Other projects included cleaning up a Second Street lot for the City of Plainview, room and yard work at Wee Care Center, and sorting clothes at Crisis Center of the Plains and Salvation Army. Students and other volunteers restriped the parking lot at Hale County Senior Center, and volunteers were involved in a clean-up project at Unger Memorial Library.

Students gathered at 8:30 a.m. at Brown Family Conference Center. After enjoying some coffee and breakfast burritos, assignments were received, and volunteers went into the community to serve.

An annual event, Serve Plainview links Wayland’s student body with the community while teaching students the value of community service.
