Wayland celebrates Jimmy Dean with rare jewelry display

PLAINVIEW – Wayland Baptist University celebrates legendary entertainer and businessman Jimmy Dean with a limited-time display on Friday, Aug. 16, of almost $1 million worth of rarely seen jewelry from the Jimmy Dean Collection.

Jewels in the Jimmy Dean Collection are not usually on public display. However, on rare occasions, usually around Jimmy Dean’s birthday or the Jimmy Dean Music Festival, the museum exhibits these extraordinary pieces. The limited-time display will be available for viewing from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A Plainview native and long-time friend of the university, Dean was born Aug. 10, 1928, and passed away June 13, 2010, but his legacy lives on at Wayland with Jimmy Dean Hall, a sprawling men’s dormitory on the northeast corner of the campus, as well as Jimmy Dean Museum, which opened in 2016 as part of The Mabee, a group of on-campus museums that also includes the Flying Queens Museum, Museum of the Llano Estacado, and temporary exhibit spaces connecting the facilities. Several years ago, Wayland started the Jimmy Dean Music Festival, a birthday celebration that has grown into a community-sponsored event hosted off campus by the Plainview Lions Club.

The Jimmy Dean Collection includes 19 exceptional pieces of jewelry the late musician’s wife, Donna, has entrusted to the Jimmy Dean Museum. It includes “crown jewels” like the famous gold and diamond belt buckle the entertainer wore during his performances, as well as a “fabulous” gold and diamond straight-line necklace with 95 graduated full-cut brilliant diamonds tapering in size. It also includes the cufflinks and studs worn by the famous Plainview native, as well as a one-of-a-kind Italian watch Jimmy Dean commissioned and enjoyed wearing. Plus, there are many more beautiful pieces, including a stunning opal.

The one-day jewelry exhibit takes place at Jimmy Dean Museum and celebrates what would have been the singer and performer’s 96th birthday. It comes on the same day as Plainview Lions Club’s Jimmy Dean Music Festival at The Venue at Sunset Pointe. Go to for more information about that event.
