Director of Development

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) - Lubbock Campus                      

SUPERVISED BY: Executive Director/Campus Dean 

POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Exempt (Administrative) 

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Director of Development reports directly to the Executive Director/Campus Dean and directs and actively participates in the University’s fund-raising activities; creates, implements and revises a multi-year and comprehensive strategic development plan; delivers valued services to a broad base of donors and prospects, and cultivates productive relationships with the campus community; actively represents the University in the community and builds relationships with donors and prospects; works with the Executive Director/Campus Dean, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at the Plainview Campus and other University leaders to identify, develop and refine initiatives that meet funding requirements of foundations and government programs; oversees donor stewardships, including reporting to major donors; fosters relationships between Wayland and its donors; and works with the Executive Director/Campus Dean and Advisory Committee to develop, cultivate and identify new potential members of the Advisory Committee. 

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES: 

  1. Coordinate activities with the Executive Director/Campus Dean.
  2. Determine individual development program staffing requirements.
  3. Direct and coordinate the unit's financial and budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, and increase efficiency.
  4. Develop and implement strategies for fundraising, marketing, media relations, and recruiting based on the University’s goals and objectives.
  5. Establish and implement the applicable policies, goals, objectives, and procedures, conferring with the Executive Director/Campus Dean, Advisory Committee Members, organization officials, and staff members as necessary.
  6. Plan, direct, and coordinate activities such as promotions, grant proposals, needs assessments, and other related activities as required.
  7. Review financial statements, activity reports, and other performance data to measure productivity and goal achievement and to determine areas needing program improvement.
  8. Communicate with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
  9. Identify main client groups and audiences and determine the best way to communicate publicity information.
  10. Work with the Communication Manager in the office of Marketing to develop exciting and effective press releases.
  11. Develop and maintain the University's corporate image and identity.
  12. Manage applicable budgets.
  13. Draft speeches for university executives and arrange interviews and other contact forms for them.
  14. Develop and evaluate advertising and promotion of development events.
  15. Establish effective working relationships with local and municipal government officials and media representatives.
  16. Select products and accessories to be displayed at trade or special production shows.
  17. Resolves problems as they arise or recommends ways to resolve them by working closely with the Executive Director / Campus Dean.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in business or a related field is required.
  2. Master’s Degree or higher preferred.

Experience and Knowledge:

  1. Experience in a university administration setting, preferably in institutional advancement, marketing, or recruiting, and a successful track record of major gifts work, fundraising management, including campaign leadership, and institutional communication/marketing is required.
  2. A deep commitment to Christian Higher Education and agreement with the purposes and philosophy of higher education as promoted by the Baptist General Convention of Texas in general and WBU in particular.
  3. An understanding of and commitment to work with educational programs related to churches, businesses, industries, and the military.
  4. Experience in the area of budgets, management, and supervising staff.
  5. Two to four years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience in all aspects of significant gifts: annual giving, corporate/foundation relations, prospect management, alumni affairs, media, and communication are preferred.

  1. Must have a working knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, situational leadership strategies, production methods, and coordinating and empowering people and resources.
  2. Must understand human behavior, performance, and individual differences in ability, personality, and interests.
  3. Must be able to demonstrate a dynamic, outgoing leadership style characterized by openness, trust, collegiality, and creativity coupled with high energy, decisiveness, and a strong commitment to Wayland’s vision, mission, core values, and strategic priorities.
  4. Must communicate information and ideas orally and in writing effectively.
  5. Must possess good computer skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  6. Must become proficient with the University Power Campus program.
  7. Must be detail-oriented and have good organizational skills.
  8. The ability to understand and interpret personnel policies and procedures.
  9. The ability to be flexible, prioritize, and available to work extended hours as needed including occasional evenings and weekends.
  10. Must be willing and able to travel occasionally.
  11. Must be reliable, responsible, dependable, and fulfilling obligations.
  12. Must be willing to lead, take charge, offer opinions and direction, and take on responsibilities and challenges.
  13. Ability to foster collaborative teamwork and maintain internal and external cooperative relationships.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance.   If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of the hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Employee must be able and willing to travel.  Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle and possess a valid state driver’s license or have access to reliable transportation.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
