Baggett and Blevins to be honored Feb. 7 with alumni awards

PLAINVIEW — Wayland Baptist University plans to recognize two outstanding alumni, Dr. Lee Baggett, BA '64, and Dr. John Blevins, BS '99, MA '03, with the Distinguished Alumni Award during the annual Blue and Gold Banquet.

The banquet takes place at 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, at Trinity Sanctuary on the Plainview campus as part of Homecoming '25 activities. Seating is limited.

Dr. Lee Baggett, a 1964 graduate, has dedicated his life to medical missions and humanitarian work. Born in Vernon, he was called to special service during his youth and spent years ministering through Spanish-speaking missions across the Texas Panhandle and Mexico. After earning his medical degree from Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, he served as a physician and disaster relief coordinator for the International Mission Board, playing a crucial role in providing free medical and dental care in underserved communities. He also served as director of the Medical Outreach Program at Hospital Mexico Americano in Guadalajara from 1974 to 2007. Today, he continues his mission work as president of Manos Hermanas in Mexico and executive director of Hands in Service Ministries in Amarillo. He and his wife, Ruthie, remain active in international ministry through First Baptist Church of Amarillo, where they serve a diverse refugee community.

Dr. John Blevins has made a lasting impact in both the medical and faith communities. Earning his undergraduate degree in 1999 and a Master of Arts in Religion in 2003, Blevins was an active member of the Pioneer Band during his time at Wayland. He later pursued a medical degree in Waco and has since established a successful career as a physician in Florida. In addition to his medical practice, Dr. Blevins has dedicated significant time to missionary work, using his expertise to provide healthcare and spiritual support in communities in need.

“Dr. Baggett and Dr. Blevins embody the spirit of service and faith that defines Wayland Baptist University,” said Jeffrey Vera, Director of Alumni Relations and Career Services. “Their dedication to medicine, missions, and ministry is an inspiration to our students and alumni alike. We are proud to recognize them for their outstanding contributions to both their professions and communities.”

The Blue and Gold Banquet is a cherished tradition during Wayland’s Homecoming festivities, celebrating alumni achievements and the university’s enduring commitment to excellence in faith and service.
