PLAINVIEW — A Homecoming Chapel service Friday, Feb. 7, featuring Jon Mark Hester and an alumni praise band kicks off Wayland Baptist University’s Homecoming ’25 weekend activities.
Hester, who earned his BA in Spanish and Religious Education at Wayland, has been involved in worship ministry for more than two decades. As a student, he played bass for the Christian band Zuigia, traveling to churches and festivals across Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. After graduation, Hester answered God’s call to ministry, leading worship, recording multiple albums, and helping found Regenerations Ministries, a nonprofit ministry focused on worship leadership and discipleship.
Hester, a 2001 graduate, will lead worship with an alumni praise team comprised of Brody Williams, 2023; Carsen Williams, 2023; Christian Ortega, 2024; Evan Mickens, 2024; Keely O'Donnell, 2024; Kira Weatherton, 2023; Melanie Hester, 2011; and Shiloh Posey, 1995 and 2004.
“Chapel is always a highlight of Homecoming, and we are thrilled to have Jon Mark Hester leading worship for HOCO ’25 with his team of alumni musicians,” said Jeffrey Vera, Director of Alumni Relations and Career Services.
HOCO ’25 activities began earlier in the week with a Military Alumni Reunion on Wednesday, Feb. 5, followed by a special 80s-themed movie night at The Fair, featuring a screening of Top Gun. Thursday’s events included tours of the three museums inside the Mabee Regional Heritage Center as well as tours of Malouf Abraham Family Art Gallery. Exciting Flying Queens and Pioneers basketball games also took place.
Friday’s activities also include Pioneer baseball, and the prestigious Blue and Gold Awards Banquet, which honors distinguished alumni and friends of the university.
“Homecoming is always a special time for the Wayland family, and we are excited to welcome alumni back to campus for a weekend filled with nostalgia, fellowship, and school spirit,” Vera said. “Whether it’s reconnecting with old friends, attending a game, or celebrating our distinguished alumni, there is something for everyone at WBU this weekend.”
Saturday’s festivities will feature an alumni coffee mixer at Broadway Brew, more basketball games, and the presentation of the Homecoming King and Queen at halftime of the Pioneers basketball game, along with the debut of the coveted “Spirit Stick” competition between students and alumni.
