Director of Athletic Bands & Assistant/Associate Professor of Instrumental Studies

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University – Plainview Campus 

SCHOOL: Creative Arts 

POSITION SUPERVISED BY: Dean, School of Creative Arts

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The primary responsibilities of the Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant/Associate Professor of Instrumental Studies will be to direct Wayland’s athletic bands, be an active and visible recruiter and clinician, and teach applied and/or classroom courses relevant to the instructor’s discipline. As a faculty member of WBU he/she will represent the University’s academic and spiritual emphasis to the students, faculty, staff, and the community in a manner consistent with the University’s mission and purpose.

SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES:

1. Teaching and administrative loads will total 24 semester hours per academic year.

2. Administrative load will total 6 semester hours in the fall and 2 hours in the spring.

3. Annual contract dates run August 1 – May 31. This is a 10-month position.

4. Direct all aspects of the WBU athletic bands program, including musical, logistical, and curricular leadership

5. Lead athletic bands in performances at WBU athletic events, including football and basketball games

6. Work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics to identify and serve other athletic events as needed

7. Coordinate and supervise adjunct instruction in instrumental areas as necessary

8. Evaluate, maintain, and update WBU instrumental inventory as needed

9. Active engagement in School of Creative Arts recruiting and retention initiatives

10. Advising undergraduate students as assigned

11. Serving on University and School of Creative Arts committees as assigned

12. Active engagement in professional development and creative/scholarly activities

13. Active engagement in service appropriate to the university faculty member

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Certification, or License:

1. The candidate must have at least one graduate degree in music, with an earned doctorate being preferred

2. Preference given to those with a strong background in athletic bands

3. Texas teaching certification with significant experience teaching in public school band programs preferred

Experience and Knowledge:

1. Experience teaching instrumental music and directing athletic bands is expected. Previous collegiate teaching is preferred.

2. Strong background of collaborating with public school band directors is essential, with previous public school teaching experience preferred.

3. Demonstrated commitment to recruiting, retaining, and mentoring students.

Skills and Abilities:

1. Ability to direct athletic bands at a high level

2. Ability to teach applied and classroom courses in the instructor’s discipline (i.e., woodwinds, brass, or percussion) at a high level

3. Willingness to coordinate recruiting activities with faculty and staff colleagues and represent the School of Creative Arts to regional, state, and national music organizations

4. Ability to manage budgets

5. Ability to coordinate all logistics inherent in the operation of a successful athletic bands program, e.g. equipment, travel, uniforms, maintenance of music library

6. Ability to envision long-term program growth, including the development of a full marching band program

7. Willingness to participate in long-range planning initiatives within the School of Creative Arts and the university as a whole

8. A strong Christian commitment and the willingness to be involved in the life of the university and her students

9. Willingness to lead off-campus travel for student concert & recruiting events

10. Commitment to consistent and transparent communication with administration, faculty/staff, and students

11. Demonstrated commitment to a mutually supportive atmosphere within a performing arts department

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance. If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Employee must be able and willing to travel and teach at external campuses. Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license. Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.

Pending final budgetary approval, this position will begin on August 1, 2025.
