Community Services
The J.E. and L.E. Mabee Learning Resources Center (LRC) serves the curriculum, instructional and informational needs of the university community. University needs must always take priority in time and resources. However, library resources are available to community members outside the university under the following circumstances:
• Plainview and area residents are permitted to use library materials in the library building with the exception of special collections and materials on reserve for classes.
• Limited borrowing privileges may be extended to adults in the Plainview area and to residents within a 60 mile radius of Plainview. Residents may obtain a library card by showing proof of residence, permitting them to borrow as many as three books at one time with one renewal. Children's books and public school textbooks are reserved for checkout by Wayland education majors only. Videos may be checked out for three days, but other audiovisual materials are limited to library use only.
• Faculty, staff, and students, from other libraries, who are members of Harrington Library Consortium (HLC), Llano Estacado Information Access Network (LEIAN), TLCA and TexShare, are entitled to the same privileges as stated for individuals external to the university community.
• National and regional Interlibrary Loan codes prohibit universities from offering Interlibrary Loan service directly to community residents. Area residents should contact their public library for interlibrary loan service.
• Area high school students who have a legitimate need for university-level library materials are allowed to use resources as needed. Area high schools may sign service agreements for their students to borrow a maximum of two books. These books may not be renewed and are subject to recall if needed by a Wayland student. Students must present personal identification and a permit slip signed by their instructor, school librarian, or principal to check out books. Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The university reserves the right to ask unruly and/or uncooperative users to leave the library. Verified attempts to steal or mutilate library materials will result in the loss of entrance privileges and may result in legal action being taken.
