Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG)
The Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) provides need-based grants to Texas residents attending approved private or independent Texas colleges or universities. This grant is available to undergraduate and graduate students working on a degree plan leading to a first associate, baccalaureate, master's, professional or doctoral degree (excluding degree plans that are intended to lead to religious ministry).
State Priority Deadline: April 15, 2024 - Students who submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by this deadline will be given first priority for available TEG grant funding for the 2024-25 academic year.
Eligibility
First-Time Grant Eligibility
- Demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA
- Classified as a Texas Resident. Complete the Texas Core Residency Questionnaire.
- Enrolled at least 3/4 time
- Register for Selective Service at sss.gov (male students only)
- Not receiving athletic scholarship in the same term that TEG is received
- Student Aid Index (SAI) [formerly Expected Family Contribution (EFC)] less than 25,400 (for the 2024-25 academic year)
Renewal Grant Eligibility
- Meet all first-time grant eligibility requirements
- Meets Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
- After first year (undergraduate & graduate) - meet WBU SAP Policy
- After second and subsequent year (undergraduate) - 24 completed credit hours in the prior year, 2.5 cumulative GPA, 75% course completion rate
- After second and subsequent year (graduate) - 18 completed credit hours in the prior year, 2.5 cumulative GPA, 75% course completion rate
- Have not reached maximum undergraduate timeframe of five years since first term offered (no timeframe for graduate students)
Grant Proration Based on Enrollment
TEG will be prorated based on hours enrolled The prorated amounts shall be calculated each term using the following schedule:
- Enrolled in 12+ hours undergraduate or 6+ hours graduate - 100% of grant will be disbursed
- Enrolled in 9-11 hours undergraduate or 4.5-5 hours graduate - 100% of grant will be disbursed
- Enrolled in 6-8 hours undergraduate or 3 hours graduate - No disbursement unless hardship granted or student is in the last semester before graduating (50% of grant will be disbursed).
- Enrolled in fewer than 6 hours or 3 hours graduate - No disbursement
Hardship or Other Proper Causes
A student who is ineligible for TEG based on grade point average (GPA), completion rate, or number of completed hours for satisfactory academic progress, or enrollment less than three-quarter time may be deemed eligible under a hardship provision.
You may submit an appeal by email to finaidhelp@wbu.edu, which includes an explanation of your special circumstances in detail and any supporting documentation.
Special circumstances may include:
- A severe illness or other condition that affected academic performance or limited your enrollment to less than 3/4 time.
- Academic performance being affected by your responsibility for the care of a sick, injured, or incapacitated relative/spouse or limited your enrollment to less than 3/4 time.
- Fewer than 9 credit hours required to complete your degree.
- Other circumstances that may have impacted your ability to meet renewal requirements.
Award Range
The maximum award for the 2024-25 academic year is $3,873. Undergraduate students with an Student Aid Index (SAI) [formerly Expected Family Contribution (EFC)] of less than or equal to 3,698 may receive up to $5,810.
