Writing Tutor for Veteran Student Success
LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Plainview Campus – Will consider a virtual setting within the state of TX for the right candidate
DEPARTMENT: This position will be in collaboration between the MTS and V-CEVSS
SUPERVISED BY: Director of MTS and Project Coordinator for V-CEVSS
AN IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate is a part-time Wayland faculty or staff member with exceptional writing and research skills as well as experience tutoring or teaching. This position is NOT restricted to student workers.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Writing Tutor for Veteran Student Success will help develop a specialized tutoring program for veteran students that is required by the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success grant. A successful candidate will work collaboratively with the director of the MTS and the project coordinator for V-CEVSS to conduct writing and resume tutoring sessions, collect data from tutoring sessions, research the particular resume needs of veteran students, and assist in developing training for future VA tutors.
SPECIFIC TASKS AND DUTIES:
- Conducting face-to-face and virtual tutoring appointments with veteran and military-connected students.
- Creating and maintaining a consistent schedule in the MTS scheduling system WCONLINE. The tutor will have the freedom to create his/her own schedule in collaboration with the MTS director and existing office schedule.
- Collecting data from tutorials with veteran students.
- Coordinating with MTS and V-CEVSS supervisors to discover best practices for tutoring veteran students.
- Undergoing training with various experts in best practices for assisting veteran students.
- Researching and designing military related resume workshops and resources.
- Commit to meeting regularly with MTS director and/or V-CEVSS project coordinator—if a virtual, must meet through Zoom
Other office duties include:
- Occasionally assisting with regular, non-veteran student tutoring as needed.
- Monitoring and answering emails.
- Answering and transferring telephone calls in a professional manner.
- Creating appointments and recording client reports.
- Assisting other staff in maintaining a professional environment in the MTS.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Certification and License: Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred; some college education required.
