Academic Advisor

LOCATION: Wayland Baptist University (WBU) – Anchorage Campus - Elmendorf

Summary:

Do you thrive in helping students navigate their academic journey? Wayland Baptist University seeks a passionate and dedicated Academic Advisor to join our Elmendorf location. You will play a pivotal role in guiding undergraduate and graduate students toward academic success, helping them choose the right program, select courses, and achieve their educational goals.

General Responsibilities: The Academic Advisor provides competent academic advising for undergraduate and graduate students at the Elmendorf location.

Responsibilities:

  • Academic Advising:
    • Provide individual and group advising sessions to students, covering program options, course selection, degree planning, and graduation requirements.
    • Evaluate transfer credits from military and academic sources and create personalized degree plans.
    • Assist students with course registration and ensure they meet prerequisites and course loads.
    • Monitor student progress, identify potential issues, and offer proactive support and resources.
  • Student Support:
    • Connect students with relevant university resources, including financial aid programs (Spouse TA, Federal Aid, Alaska Student Loan), academic support services, and career development opportunities.
    • Be present at campus events to connect with students and promote academic programs.
    • Contribute to a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with the Campus Executive Director, Dean, and Assistant Dean on academic initiatives and student success strategies.
    • Collaborate with faculty and staff to ensure students have access to necessary support.
  • Other:
    • Assist with administrative tasks as assigned.
    • Maintain accurate and confidential student records.
    • Contribute to a positive and collaborative work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience: Experience advising students in an academic setting preferred.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of higher education programs, policies, and procedures. Familiarity with financial aid options and career development resources.
  • Skills: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint). Ability to prioritize tasks, work independently, and collaborate effectively. Commitment to student success and the university's mission.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employment is subject to an introductory period to monitor employee performance.   If hired, the prospective employee must present documentation within three (3) days of hire date to establish their identity and employment eligibility as required by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  Employee must be able and willing to travel.  Must be able to operate a licensed motor vehicle, have access to a dependable motor vehicle, and possess a valid state driver’s license.  Must have and maintain a satisfactory driver’s record.
